A Creative Approach to Waste Management

Each year, Leeuwarden, Netherlands welcomes a wave of new students, to begin their university journey. Among them are young individuals experiencing independent living for the first time. As they adapt to their new environment, their daily habits contribute significantly to the city’s waste production.

Our client, Omrin,the waste management company is keen on empowering young adults to manage their waste responsibly. Partnering closely with them, our team proposes a customized solution for our peers. Using creativity and engagement, our aim is to raise awareness and promote sustainable living among students.

THE CHALLENGE


How do we ensure that the amount of waste is reduced? One way of doing this is by separating waste and consuming, but perhaps there is another alternative. What creative, innovative ideas and solutions can be found in the immediate surroundings?




THE STRATEGY


Its multi-faceted strategy that has been developed after analyzing the results of research. The strategy is aimed at addressing a specific problem and is composed of several elements that work together to guide students in separating their waste and changing their behavior. The solution is designed to be effective by targeting specific areas of the students' daily routine and making small changes that will ultimately lead to a reduction in waste and an increase in awareness of the importance of proper waste management. Overall, this multi-faceted approach aims to make the process of separating waste as easy and effortless as possible for the students, while still raising awareness of the importance of environmental conservation.

Main question of the research: 

How students interact with the waste they generate in their daily routine?

Important aspects:
Motivations / influences / knowledge about separation and reduction / waste dispose and separation / when waste is generated / feelings about waste and the consequences.

Methods: 
Diary study, card sorting, interviews, Desk research.

One aspect of the multi-faceted strategy, a social campaign. The campaign is designed to connect with students by speaking their language and being present in their daily lives. The goal is to educate students on the proper use of recycling bins and help them understand how to recycle correctly. This social campaign is an integral part of the multi-faceted solution that has been designed to address the problem of waste management and change student.







We are very happy with the collaboration with Mariana and her fellow colleagues. They have done thorough research into the customer journey of our target group. They have come up with a good solution for us. And in terms of design, it always looked great. The collaboration was very pleasant and equal. thanks!

Another aspect of the multi-faceted strategy, the redesign of the bio-bin. The redesign is intended to improve the bio-bin by addressing issues such as smell and ergonomics. The goal is to make the process of separating organic waste more pleasant and user-friendly for students. The redesign of the bio-bin is an important part of the solution as it aims to improve the practical aspect of separating waste and make it more convenient for students.
